TOPIC: Oils aint oils...

Oils aint oils... 1 year, 7 months ago #794

I have been sorting out some issues with the Prado for a while and decided to look into the engine oil issue abit more.

I have been running Penrite 10W-50 for about six months and noticed some increases in engine noise at idle and fuel use. Yesterday I was at my local mechanic sorting out an alternator issue and he noticed I was running this grade of oil. He advised me to switch to a 10W-30 grade for my engine. I could only get 5W-30 in a brand I was happy with and decided to try that.

The difference was large, the engine is so quite now inside the car, you have to watch to tacho to make sure it was still running ! It seems alot smoother to drive and I think it is a good move.

You live and learn everyday I say !!

Re: Oils aint oils... 3 months, 1 week ago #2028

Mat, I've just finished an oil change on my Prado which has taken nearly 3 hours!...
Ok, some background info- It's a 2003 V6 Petrol Grande about 180k on the clock.
First time it's shown any sign of issues was last week whent the oil light started flicking on... I checked the oil and there was no issue there.. level was fine...What then??.
I had heard of "Sludge" on engines with a few 100k's on them having some oil pickup issues and so I decided to drop the sump and have a squiz.
Low an behold there was 1/2 a stubby of sludge sitting in the bottom of the sump and my oil-pickup was also caked with sludge.
So I pulled it all out and gwave a good clean. I changed filter and filled her up with new oil.

Question here if I can is; Is this due to the Aluminimum block? or age or Oil or combination of all?
Reason why I ask about the aluminimum block is that I have pulled steel engines apart with more K's then this and there was no where near as much sludge nor was it so firmly caked onto the internal wall.

Any ideas?

Also you mentioned you changed your oil- but are you running a petrol or Diesel?

Daza, Matts 120 Prado was a V6 so was pertoal but his new 150 is Turbo Diesel. From reading his post I think this is in reference to the old 120 V6.
2006 TD GXL Toyota Prado with some steel and a few shiny bits (altough the tracks have taken the shine away)

Understood. But has anyone else suffered this Sludge problem or should I start a new thread?
