One of the biggest gripes we hear from tourers and towers is simple: fuel range. Modern 4X4s, especially big ones like the F-150, can chew through juice quickly once you start towing, bolting on accessories, or tackling sand and hills. That “1000km range” figure looks a lot smaller when you’re pulling a van into a headwind or idling along a low-range track. And if you’re travelling in the outback? Those road houses are never as common as you hope when the needle starts pointing south.
That’s where long-range tanks come into their own. They cut the anxiety out of remote touring, make long-haul towing less of a juggling act, and mean you can drive past overpriced bush servos without a second thought.
The Brown Davis Solution
For owners of the 2021–present Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost, Brown Davis has stepped up with a 235L replacement tank. It swaps out the factory 136L unit and boosts capacity by a huge 72.8%. On paper, that’s stretching your range from around 1,088km to just shy of 1,900km (based on 12.5L/100km).
In practice, it means you can tow a heavy van across the Nullarbor with fewer stops, tackle remote tracks without lugging half a dozen jerry cans, and simply enjoy the drive without watching the fuel gauge like a hawk.
Built Tough, Tested Tougher
This isn’t just a bigger box of fuel bolted under the chassis. Brown Davis builds their tanks from aluminised steel, combining the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance of aluminium. Internal baffles reduce slosh and add rigidity, while an integrated swirl pot keeps the pickup fed even when you’re down to the dregs.
Every tank is folded, welded, and pressure-tested in Australia before hitting the market. The end result is a tank that’s every bit as rugged as the 4X4s it’s designed to fuel.
Fitment and Compatibility
The F-150 unit is designed for short-wheelbase, dual-cab 4X4 models and fits neatly in the stock location. No modifications required, around 4.5 hours to install, and it retains the factory filler point. Brown Davis reckons it’ll happily coexist with most suspension setups, GVM upgrades, aftermarket trays, and exhausts, though you may need to tweak filler location with some tray installs.
Peace of Mind and Support
Range is only half the story, reliability and backup matter too. Brown Davis has been building tanks for over 40 years, with a nationwide dealer network and a three-year warranty backing every product. That means if something does go wrong, you’re not left stranded.
