In news that’ll make 4X4ers with tropic fever champ at the bit, the iconic Bloomfield Track has re-opened just in time for the 2024 Cape York season. The route, closed since mid-December following the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, is once again ready to offer an unparalleled adventure through one of Queensland’s most picturesque landscapes for 4X4ers heading to the tip.
Tropical Cyclone Jasper wreaked havoc along the track, in some places causing complete washouts and significant disruptions. Since early January, crews have been working from both ends of the track to repair and restore it to its former status as a premier 4X4 experience.
Spanning from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, the Bloomfield Track traverses through diverse country with a whole host of different environments along the way, from rainforest canopies to remote beaches and steep ridges. There’s nothing quite like the stunning vistas back to Cape Trib, the crystal clear waters of the Emmagen Creek Crossing, and the isolated beauty of Cowie Beach with its red mangroves and fringing coral reefs.
Despite the improvements, the track still presents various challenges, such as steep inclines, unpredictable creek crossings, and sections of unimproved road that can become particularly perilous in wet conditions. Like much of the Cape, the Bloomfield track has seen recent construction of new bridges over key crossings like the Bloomfield River intending to keep the track consistently open.
The reopening of the Bloomfield Track is a significant moment for the region, highlighting the resilience and hard work of the local communities and restoration teams. This season, the track promises an unforgettable journey through one of Queensland’s most scenic and adventurous routes.
