Down an unmarked dirt road, in a little-known part of the New South Wales mid-north coast lays one of the most epic 4X4 tracks around, the Rover Trail. The drive there is short, but it’s just a prelude to the day’s real challenges. It’s been a while since we’ve taken this route, and by the looks of it, we’re in for a bumpy ride. As soon as we hit the track, the excitement kicks in. The northern end of the track, with its interesting and challenging terrain, welcomes us with a stretch of rocks that demands we shift the Ford’s into low range. The first order of business is lowering the tyre pressures to 24 PSI, preparing us to tackle the mean-looking steps ahead.
Preparation and Strategy
Before diving back into the Everest and Ranger, we decide it’s wise to scout the track on foot. The key to success here is picking the right line and committing to it. Diff locks and capable vehicles boost our confidence, essential for tackling gnarly tracks. The closeness of the Rover Trail to the beach we just left adds an incredible contrast to our adventure, embodying the wildness and beauty of our journey.
Trials and Triumphs
Rover Trail throws us into the thick of it immediately. Navigating this terrain requires not just technical skill but also a strategy that involves careful planning and sometimes, track building. Despite the challenges, the thrill of off-roading shines through, especially when we manage to maneuver through particularly gnarly sections. There are moments of tension, like when the rear quarter of Pat’s Everest inches dangerously close to the rock face, but the sense of achievement after inching the rigs through the squeeze is unparalleled.
Teamwork in the Face of Adversity
Our adventure underscores the importance of teamwork, especially during recoveries. When one of the rigs gets stuck, we resort to a slingshot winch technique, demonstrating the ingenuity and collaboration needed in such situations. The process involves careful setup with tree trunk protectors, snatch blocks, and dampeners to ensure safety and efficiency. This technique, along with the guidance and support from the team, allows us to navigate through the most challenging parts of the trail.
The Southern End: A Different Pace
After the intense challenges of the northern end, we explored the southern end of the Rover Trail, which offers a less precarious but still engaging experience. It’s a perfect spot for those looking for a less intense but equally rewarding off-roading adventure. This part of the trail provides a chance to enjoy the scenery and the calm after the storm, so to speak.
Reflections on the Adventure
This journey through the Rover Trail has been a testament to the spirit of off-roading – the challenge, the teamwork, and the sheer joy of exploring the great outdoors. From the technical difficulties to the moments of triumph, each turn of the trail has brought its own rewards. Whether you’re a seasoned off-roader or new to the adventure, the Rover Trail has something for everyone, offering a perfect blend of challenge and beauty.
