When we first set out to fit the AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series running boards to Pat’s F-150, there were a few reservations. Electronic steps sitting low down in Aussie terrain? Red dirt, sand, and water here aren’t exactly gentle on anything electronic, especially something positioned to cop all that abuse head-on. And then, there was the question of off-road durability. Would these steps just get snagged every other weekend?
But after taking them for the Big Lap around Australia in Season 17, our concerns have been put to rest. These steps have proven to be rock solid. Not only have they performed without a hitch, but they also add some seriously helpful functionality to Pat’s rig. Here’s the lowdown.
Performance and Reliability
The PowerStep Smart Series boards deploy every time without any drama, making entry into the lifted F-150 a breeze. They drop down farther than standard steps, which means no more awkward scrambling or stretching to get into the big rig. And when the doors shut, the steps tuck back up so snugly that they stay out of harm’s way, sitting even higher than typical fixed steps. This little feature alone is a game changer for 4X4ing, as it prevents the steps from becoming a drag point or taking extra knocks. Sure, they might not bounce off rocks like a dedicated rock slider, but for a tourer they’re a winner.
Ground Clearance and Durability
What’s impressive is how AMP Research managed to balance ground clearance with usability. When retracted, these running boards tuck up to the body and offer a level of protection to the sills from ruts and wayward tree roots that are known for punching in sill panels. They hold strong too, boasting a hefty 250kg+ load capacity, which is more than enough for even the burliest of 4X4er. This kind of durability is critical for both off-road performance and the daily abuse that a 4X4 step endures. UpFitter, the Aussie company who brought them to market here tell us there’s a trick PTFE military-grade coating on the aluminium construction designed to withstand the corrosion that can otherwise quickly set in after exposure to water, salt, and dirt.
Tech and Convenience
The PowerStep Smart Series has a bit of tech flair too, with an app-controlled override switch. At first, we weren’t sure how much we’d use this, but it’s actually quite handy. You can control the steps directly from your phone – say if you want to clean the boards after a beach run or muddy weekend, or keep them retracted when hitting particularly rough terrain. It’s simple and actually ended up being more useful than expected. Plus, with integrated LED lighting, stepping into the ‘Thirst Responder’ at night feels safer, especially out in dark campsites or unlit tracks.
Setup and Maintenance
Fitting the steps to the F-150 was straightforward thanks to the included mount kit and plug-n-play wiring harness. AMP Research has really thought about installation here making them a simple DIY for most 4X4s. If you’re fitting them to an imported and converted rig it may be worth roping in a professional just in case there’s conversion quirks that need to be overcome. And when it comes to keeping the boards running smoothly, a a quick pressure wash on the linkage points and a silicone spray is all it takes to avoid any dirt or binding issues.
Final Thoughts
The AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series running boards feel like a win for anyone with a lifted rig or who just wants an easy way to hop in and out without sacrificing ground clearance. The engineering is top-notch, they’re tough, and that app feature gives them a modern edge. After putting them through some of Australia’s harshest conditions, we can safely say they’re built for it.
They’re definitely a premium addition so don’t expect a bargain here, but they’re one that pays off in usability and protection. If you’ve been eyeing a set of these for your F-150 or similar setup, we reckon go for it—AMP Research has designed a product that’s up to the challenge.
