In a significant development for Australian 4X4 enthusiasts and families, Ford has announced the introduction of its Pro Trailer Backup Assist technology in the 2024 models of the popular Ranger and Everest. This innovation, aimed at simplifying the often challenging process of reversing a trailer, marks a new era in vehicle utility and convenience.
Previously showcased in the F-150 in 2023, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist allows drivers to intuitively steer their trailer using a control dial, simplifying a task that has traditionally required considerable skill and experience. “Reversing a trailer requires counterintuitive steering inputs, and even seasoned drivers can find it challenging,” explains Zack McIntyre, an advanced driver assist systems engineer at Ford. “Our new system allows for precise and stress-free maneuvering.”
Standard on the Ranger Wildtrak, Platinum, and Raptor, and available as an option in the Everest, the system is part of Ford’s commitment to enhancing the towing capabilities of its vehicles. In addition to this new feature, the Ranger and Everest come equipped with a suite of towing-friendly technologies, including a reversing camera with hitch view, trailer light check, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, and an integrated brake controller.
Alongside the Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Ford is also rolling out upgrades across various Ranger models. The Ranger XL, for instance, will now come with standard heavy-duty suspension, catering to customers who frequently carry heavy loads. Additionally, the Ranger XLS will include both the Tech and Towing Packs as standard features, enhancing its appeal as a versatile workhorse.
The introduction of the Flexible Rack System as an option on the Ranger Sport and Wildtrak further underscores Ford’s focus on versatility and practicality. This system, which replaces the standard Sports Bar and Load Box Access Points, or Sailplane and Box Rails, was initially a feature of the Ranger Platinum and Wildtrak X special edition.
In response to evolving consumer preferences, Ford has also streamlined its Everest and Ranger line-ups, discontinuing certain variants and making popular features like Zone Lighting and Black Stand-Off Roof Rails standard on selected models.
The updated Ford Ranger and Everest range, with these enhancements, is set to begin production in March 2024. The only significant change in the Manufacturer List Prices (MLP) is for the 4×4 XLS Double Pickup 2.0L Bi-Turbo, reflecting the inclusion of the previously optional Towing Pack and XLS Tech Pack as standard features.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Ford’s latest offerings represent a significant step in meeting the diverse needs of Australian drivers, particularly those who regularly face the challenges of towing.
