22,971 LandCruisers recalled over fire concerns from DPF
In a similar turn of events to the Ford Ranger recall seen a few years back, Toyota has now issued a recall for some 22,971 70 Series LandCruisers, built between 2016 and 2018, due to the possibility of a fire starting near the DPF. As is an ongoing concern for essentially any vehicle fitted with a DPF, dry vegetation can accumulate around the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) after the vehicle is driven in long grass.
This recall comes despite there being instructions within the owners manual that describe how to clean out and remove vegetation from the DPF system. Essentially the recall notes that if the instruction in the owners manual is not followed, there is an increased risk of the material combusting while the DPF undertakes its periodic regeneration.
Toyota has noted in the recall, a fix to the LandCruisers with a modified heat-shield for the DPF and lower exhaust system, that will reduce the risk of a fire occurring. They are also enabling a DPF manual regeneration mode, where the owner of the vehicle is able to undertake a regeneration while the vehicle is away from long and dry vegetation, and ensure a safe DPF regen.
Toyota will be contacting all owners of the impacted LandCruisers with concern to the DPF recall, however, owners are being asked if they have any concerns, to contact their nearest authorised Toyota dealer. The repairs and modifications needed will then be undertaken as soon as possible, and at no cost to the owner.
