They’ve breathed life back into one of the oldest watering holes in the outback, and it’s quickly becoming the social hub of Beltana once more.
A Town That Refuses to Fade
Beltana sits about 540 kays north of Adelaide, tucked into some of the best touring country South Australia has to offer. The population these days is tiny, a few dozen permanent residents, but the town has always punched above its weight when it comes to history. From its beginnings servicing mining and pastoral industries, to its days as the end of the railway line, Beltana has always been a meeting place.
Now, with the Royal Victoria swinging its doors open again, there’s a fresh excuse to put Beltana on your touring map. Think Friday arvo knock-offs with the locals, a slice of history in every sandstone block, and a chance to stay connected to the land’s deep heritage.
Why It’s Worth the Detour
For anyone doing a Flinders trip, Beltana now offers more than a photo op of old ruins, it’s got a proper pub. Cold beer, early closing times for quiet camps (by choice, not because the taps run dry), and a yarn or two with the owners who’ve spent years restoring the place.
