Ever heard of the scenic Lockhart River? Located in the heart of Cape York, it’s one of Queensland’s most serene and untouched beauties. a hidden gem if you will. Most tourists set their sights on Weipa, Bamaga, Seisia, or the iconic Tip of Cape York. Yet, only a handful venture to the East Coast, and even fewer explore what Lockhart River genuinely has to offer.

For the longest time, Lockhart’s tourism primarily revolved around pit stops for fuel or a quick supermarket run. But with the soon-to-open camping ground, strategically placed near the main boat ramp, it’s poised to be a game changer. Designed specifically for tourists and catering for tents, camper trailers, and the increasing caravan brigade, it’s bound to draw a crowd.

But why now? Well, the tracks to Lockhart River are in better nick every year. With more vehicles heading to the east coast, and the rise of birdwatching tours and nature enthusiasts, it’s high time the town catered to its adventurous guests.

Yet, welcoming more tourists isn’t without its challenges. The locals cherish their fishing spots and supermarket stock. And there’s a genuine concern about sustaining both with an influx of visitors. So, the town’s making a mindful entry into the tourism scene, ensuring the growth doesn’t compromise the very essence of the place.

But it’s not just about nature. The town is enriching its cultural experiences too. This November, there’s a dance festival, a throwback to 50 years ago when Lockhart River hosted its first-ever dance fest. Imagine a gathering where dancers from multiple communities, including Groote Eylandt and Saibai, come together in a spectacular showcase of tradition and art.

So, while the campground’s grand opening is still in the future, there’s a buzz in the air. Lockhart River is slowly but surely rolling out the welcome mat. All set to share its beauty and rich heritage with the world.
