The recent launch of Australia’s most popular ute, the new Toyota Hilux, has been and gone. And with that, the cat is out of the bag in terms of pricing and specs.
There are plenty of models and combinations on offer throughout the range, which for 4X4s go from $36,990 for a 2.4 litre diesel single-cab, up to $57,990 for the SR5 2.8 litres diesel automatic. On top of these prices, you’ll have to also fork out for your on-roads.

As is normal now, top-specced utes come with plenty of technology, bells and whistles for the extra dollars. LED headlamps, digital radio, keyless entry, push-button start, 18-inch alloys and a 220-volt power socket in the tray.
Many will note that the Hilux has finally had a bump in towing capacity, which is now 3,500 kilograms for a braked trailer at best. Those wanting an automatic transmission will have to suffice with 3,200kg.
Suspension has been developed locally for Australian conditions, and Toyota are pushing 20% better rear articulation and much stronger underbody protection. A rear locker is available for SR and SR5 models, and the whole range sports a chassis that is 20% more rigid than the outgoing model.

Fuel consumption sits under 8 litres per hundred kilometres, with almost 7 litres possible.
The 2.8 litre (1GD-FTV) diesel makes 130kW @ 3,400rpm and 450Nm, which is available between 1,600 and 2,400rpm. The worst state fuel consumption for this engine is 8.5 litres per hundred kilometres for the automatic SR5. The manual gains almost 1 litre per hundred kilometres efficiency, with 7.6 being the figure.
