The wait is over for 4X4 adventurers as Western Australia’s Kimberley region opens its gates once again. After a challenging period of recovery from the worst floods in the state’s history, key national parks are now accessible, offering thrilling off-road trails and breathtaking landscapes.
The Floods: A Brief Recap
Last year, central Kimberley experienced unprecedented flooding that led to evacuations in Fitzroy Crossing and surrounding communities. Homes were inundated, and critical infrastructure, including the Fitzroy Bridge, was heavily damaged. This natural disaster had a significant impact on tourism, as access roads and park facilities were devastated, necessitating extensive repairs.
Adventure Reawakens
With recovery efforts bearing fruit, here’s what’s now on offer for off-road enthusiasts:
- Silent Grove (Dulundi) & Bell Gorge (Dalmanyi): Ready your vehicles for rough terrains leading to Bell Gorge, where the waterfalls and serene pools await.
- Lennard Gorge: A rugged track offers a challenging drive ending at dramatic waterfalls and pools, perfect for a cooling dip.
- Windjana Gorge (Bandilngan): Famous for its high cliffs and freshwater crocodiles, Windjana is a must-visit for those interested in both geology and wildlife.
- Tunnel Creek (Dimalurru): Gear up for an adventurous ride to Australia’s oldest cave system, providing a unique blend of history and natural beauty.
The reopening extended on April 29 to Mt Hart (Walarra Mindi), adding more epic destinations for 4X4 fans.
East Kimberley Joins the Fun
Purnululu National Park and Mitchell River National Park are also slated to open soon, expanding the possibilities for extended adventures in the region.
Rebuilding and Recovery
Significant efforts have been made to rebuild and ensure safety. Sarah Mullineux of DBCA shared, “We’re thrilled about Windjana Gorge’s reopening for camping and day use. We’ve seen substantial growth and some changes to the trails. We ask visitors to stick to the trails and be cautious.”
Caution at Danggu Geikie Gorge
Although Danggu Geikie Gorge remains closed due to the extensive damage, plans are underway to partially reopen later this year. “The longer-term planning for that area is also occurring with our traditional owners, and we’re working through what the visitor facilities will look like at that park in future years,” Mullineux explained.
Road and Trail Updates
The roads to Purnululu have been recently graded, and efforts are ongoing to ensure they are safe for travel. Despite some damage from late-season wet weather, the region is nearly ready for robust 4X4 activity.
Why The Kimberley Calls
The Kimberley region offers a remote wilderness experience with rugged landscapes that are inherently appealing to those seeking adventure. “It’s quite special for people to be able to do that, something that’s important to all of the people who live here,” Mullineux remarked.
Prepare for the Journey
As you gear up for this adventure, remember to respect the recovering landscapes. Pack your essentials, check your vehicle, and get ready to explore the reborn wilderness of Kimberley.
