Join Pat and Josh on an exhilarating off-road adventure to West Cape Howe National Park, nestled just southwest of Albany, Western Australia. Their journey, captured beautifully in our latest YouTube video, takes viewers through the majestic Karri forests and challenging sand tracks that make this area a must-visit for 4X4ers and nature lovers alike.
The Beauty of Karri Forests
Driving through the dense, towering Karri forests is a sight to behold. These forests offer not just breathtaking views but also the serenity of nature’s untouched beauty. The tracks, lined with these gigantic trees, present a picturesque drive, filled with smooth bends and a tranquil ambience.
The adventure intensifies as Pat and Josh tackle the perilous journey to Bornholm Beach. Known among local 4X4ers as a rite of passage, the track to the beach is a one-way route that tests the mettle of both the driver and the vehicle. Descending to the beach is manageable, but the ascent is where the real challenge lies, pushing vehicles to their limits.
Navigational Tips and Local Insights
Getting to Bornholm Beach involves a bit of local knowledge. The direct route through Shephards Hill Road may be tempting, but it’s locked. Instead, Bornholm Road South is the recommended path, leading straight to the beach. For those who find themselves stuck, local farmers offer a recovery service, albeit at a steep price of $2000—a testament to the track’s difficulty.
One crucial tip for tackling the soft sands of Bornholm Beach is adjusting tyre pressure. The locals recommend dropping to 8 PSI to ease the strain on your vehicle, Pat reckons the difference is like swapping from stilettos to a pair of Mongrel boots. This adjustment spreads the vehicle’s weight over a larger area, helping your rig stay on top of the sand enhancing traction significantly.
Pat and Josh’s Experience
The descent to the beach is one of the longest sandy descents they have ever faced, changing flora and spectacular views accompanying them to the shore. The ascent, however, posed a significant challenge, especially under the summer heat softening the sand. However, with proper tyre pressure and some expert maneuvering, the journey up proved just as rewarding as the journey down.
Throughout their adventure, both Pat and Josh had their moments of struggle and triumph. The Ranger, faced with some of the softest sands, showed remarkable resilience after a tyre pressure adjustment. Similarly, Ford Everest demonstrated its prowess, particularly when Josh reduced his tyre pressures incrementally, showcasing how small changes can have substantial impacts on performance.
