The CREB (Cairns Regional Electricity Board) Track is one of the most well-known 4X4 tracks due to it being considered one of Australia’s most spectacular and challenging trails. Unfortunately, the wet weather has rained on our parade and has resulted in the closing of the CREB track. If you were thinking of heading there soon, your plans will sadly need to be changed.
We love all 71km of the CREB track, which starts just north of Daintree Village. It links Daintree to Wujal Wujal. If you’ve hit up the track before, you’ll know first hand it’s suited for well-equipped 4X4 vehicles. Drivers who boast decent vehicle recovery experience will also fare better. In dry conditions it’s an awesome, challenging run where you’ll find steep and rough parts throughout. A speed of between 15 and 20kmh is advised to take the track on in the most sensible way.
However, even after a moderate amount of rainfall, the track can become treacherous or impassable. You need to have your recovery hat on because you’ll find your vehicle will become bogged easily during your adventure.
Although facing a few challenges is usually just a fun part of the trip, the large amount of rain we’ve experienced recently has shut the track down. In the past, council has shut the track down without warning to ensure motorists don’t enter hazardous conditions. Safety is always the number one priority, even if this means we’ve got to wait a little longer to enjoy the track.
