Getting bogged might be part of the adventure, but knowing how to get out of it like a pro is what separates the weekend warriors from the seasoned off-roaders. Recovery boards, like Exitrax, are a 4X4 essential, and when used properly, they can get you unstuck in no time. Here’s how to make the most of your Exitrax and avoid turning a minor bogging into a major headache.

Step 1: Know When to Stop

The moment you feel your rig slowing down, resist the urge to plant your foot and hope for the best. Spinning your tyres won’t just get you stuck—it’ll dig a deeper hole and likely belly out your rig. As soon as you sense trouble, stop. Assess the situation and get ready to take action.

Step 2: Get to Know Your Gear

Exitrax recovery boards are built tough, with a design that’s engineered to engage with your tyre tread and handle the weight of a fully-loaded 4X4. Here’s what sets them apart:

Nylon Cleats: These cleats are robust and designed to withstand pressure, unlike cheaper boards that melt or wear out under heavy use.

Engineered Angles: The boards have a deliberate approach angle to help your tyres grip and climb out of the bog.

Underside Grip: The cleats on the underside prevent the boards from slipping out on slick terrain, ensuring stability during recovery.

Handles: These double as digging tools, making your boards a two-in-one recovery solution.

Step 3: Dig Before You Deploy

While recovery boards are powerful tools, they need a little help to work their magic. Use the handles on your Exitrax as a shovel to clear debris in front of your tyres and under the vehicle’s belly. This helps create a smoother path for your tyres to engage with the boards.

Pay attention to:

Clearing mud, sand, or rocks from around the tyres.

Digging out any material that’s wedged under the chassis.

Step 4: Set Yourself Up for Success

Before you attempt to drive out, consider what got you bogged in the first place. Make adjustments to give your 4X4 the best shot at escaping:

Lower Your Tyre Pressure: Dropping your tyre pressure increases surface area and improves traction.

Engage Low Range: Maximise torque and control with low range gearing.

Lock Your Diffs: If you have differential locks, engage them to distribute power evenly across your tyres.

Step 5: Drive Out with Finesse

This isn’t a situation where brute force wins. When you’re ready to drive out, follow these steps:

Ease Onto the Boards: Apply gentle throttle until your tyres catch the leading teeth of the Exitrax.

Let the Boards Do the Work: Once engaged, slowly increase acceleration to climb out.

Avoid Digging: Slamming the accelerator too early can cause the tyres to spin and dig deeper holes.

You’ll feel your vehicle lift and angle upwards as it climbs out of the bog. Keep steady and controlled until you’re fully clear of the sticky situation.

Pro Tip: Always Be Prepared

Recovery isn’t just about the gear—it’s about mindset and preparation. Having the right tools, like Exitrax, makes a massive difference, but understanding how to use them effectively is what keeps your adventures rolling.

And don’t forget—once you’re out of the mud, it’s time to celebrate. Nothing beats cracking a cold one after conquering a recovery like a pro.

Whether it’s your first bog or your hundredth, Exitrax recovery boards are your ticket to getting back on track. With a little practice and these tips in mind, you’ll be handling recoveries like a seasoned 4X4 veteran in no time.
