An alternative route on the Birdsville Track between Marree and Birdsville, known as the ‘Inside Track’ has re-opened to the public after several years of closure.
Running between Clifton Hills and Birdsville, the Inside Track runs past the Goyder Lagoon and is very vulnerable to flooding. The Outer Track, now the more commonly used road to Birdsville was made to provide a less flood-prone track between Birdsville and Marree.
“It is not a 100-kilometre an hour road but around the 70 kilometres an hour you could travel at and you will get there safely.” Said Diamantina Council spokesman Trevor Stewart.
“There’s a lot of history and it is a really nice drive through there.”
As always, plan and research your route carefully, and contact the Diamantina Shire Council for up-to-date information regarding track closures.
