This season, we had the pleasure of inviting Marty McInnes from REDARC to join our team on an incredible journey from Exmouth to Carnarvon for Pat Callinan’s 4×4 Adventures. Marty’s expertise with REDARC’s gear and his enthusiasm for the outback made him a fantastic addition to the crew. From the stunning coastal tracks to some truly memorable challenges, this adventure had it all. In this blog, Marty shares his perspective on what it was like behind the scenes and the moments that made the trip unforgettable.
I was incredibly fortunate to be invited by Pat to join him on an exciting filming adventure for his new season of Pat Callinan’s 4×4 Adventures. This opportunity took us from Exmouth to Carnarvon across some of Australia’s most rugged and scenic outback tracks.
My first interaction with Pat was brief yet significant. I met him during a quick visit with Anthony Kittel, owner of Redarc, at the Out of Town Group. Pat was there having his F150 fitted with a Longranger tank. Our meeting was short—a quick hello and goodbye—but it left a memorable impression.
The next time I worked more closely with Pat was during the installation of the Ultimate Redarc system in the F150. The team at West Side AE reached out to me because they were unsure about the placement of the new equipment. This led to a complete overhaul of the layout, resulting in an outstanding fit-out that really showcased the capabilities of the system. This successful collaboration led to an invite to the F150 launch event and the premiere of the new season at Mountain Culture Brewery. The event was fantastic— I had the chance to meet many of the partners involved in the build and enjoy an evening filled with great conversations and camaraderie.
Our interactions didn’t stop there. Pat and I continued to stay in touch regularly, discussing the new system and the content I could contribute to his shows and talks. This ongoing dialogue helped us refine our ideas and ensured we were well-prepared for future collaborations.
The big opportunity came during the Rose Hill show when Pat reached out with a proposal. He invited me to join him on the road for filming, suggesting a collaboration with our Marketing team. I was thrilled at the prospect and gladly accepted. I informed Pat that Taylor and Greg from Marketing would also be attending the show. We arranged a meeting, and everything was set for our involvement.
As the trip approached, my schedule became quite hectic. After returning from Cycle Week in Adelaide late on Friday night, I immediately began the process of washing and packing. By Sunday night, I was off to the airport, flying to Perth for a stopover. The next leg of the journey was a red-eye flight to Learmonth, just south of Exmouth, to kick off our adventure.
The preparation and excitement leading up to this trip were well worth it. The adventure promised to be an incredible experience, and I was eager to see what lay ahead as we hit the dirt tracks and filmed for the new season of Pat Callinan’s 4×4 Adventures.
Day 1
Our first day of the adventure kicked off on a wonderfully relaxed note. With no filming scheduled, we seized the opportunity to explore and unwind. We headed to Jim’s Beach, a serene spot just 25 minutes from Exmouth. It was the perfect way to start our week together, offering a blend of leisure and natural beauty.
As we arrived at the beach, the sense of excitement was palpable. The place was stunning—a true tropical paradise with its white sands and clear turquoise waters. It was an ideal setting to get to know the team better before diving into the week’s filming activities.
I spent the afternoon with Jess, Josh, and Jimmy. Their company made the experience even more enjoyable. The water was unbelievably clear, offering a pristine view of the underwater world. Snorkeling in these conditions was nothing short of spectacular. The marine life was vibrant and diverse. Schools of large fish swam gracefully among the colourful corals, their scales shimmering in the sunlight. The reef was alive with a kaleidoscope of colours—each coral formation was unique and mesmerizing.
One of the highlights was encountering a few medium-sized reef sharks. They moved through the water with such elegance and grace, adding an element of excitement to our snorkeling adventure. The sight of a turtle gliding effortlessly among the corals was equally captivating. It felt like stepping into an underwater world that was both tranquil and teeming with life.
The experience was overwhelming in the best way possible. To think that this was just the first day of our journey, and we were already surrounded by such incredible natural beauty, was astounding. The crystal-clear water and diverse marine life set the tone for the week ahead, and it was clear that we were in for an unforgettable adventure.
Spending the afternoon in such a picturesque setting allowed us to bond and relax before the intense filming schedule began. It was a perfect introduction to the trip and a reminder of why we were all there—to explore, enjoy, and make the most of every moment. As the sun began to set and we wrapped up our day at Jim’s Beach, it was evident that the camaraderie among the team was already strong, and the week ahead held great promise.
Day 2 & 3
Our adventure began promptly at 5:30 AM on Day 2. The early start was essential for making the most of our day, as we quickly packed up our swags and loaded the cars with gear. Our destination was Thomas Carter Lookout, a stunning spot that provided breathtaking views of the landscape. However, it soon became clear that this was merely a warm-up for the more dramatic sights awaiting us.
From Thomas Carter Lookout, we embarked on a 4-kilometer hike to the renowned Charles Knife Edge Walk. Armed with drones and camera equipment, we traversed rugged terrain and navigated narrow paths to reach the Knife Edge Walk. The hike was demanding, but the panoramic views at the top made every step worthwhile. The ridge itself, which gives the walk its name, lives up to its reputation. It is a thin, exposed track that seems to cut sharply through the landscape, offering an exhilarating sense of height and openness. The sheer drop-offs on either side and the sweeping vistas below showcased why this trail is so renowned.
Our efforts to capture the stunning landscape on video and in photographs were rewarded with some of the most impressive footage of the trip. The dramatic scenery provided a perfect backdrop for our content. After a day filled with exploration and filming, we headed to our next destination: a campsite by the beach at South Lefroy.
We arrived at South Lefroy just in time for sunset, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Being from the East Coast, where sunsets over the water are uncommon, I was particularly awestruck by the view. The sky was ablaze with colours as the sun dipped below the horizon, creating a serene and picturesque end to our day. The next morning, we were greeted by another stunning display as the sunrise painted the sky with warm golden tones, reflecting off the water and creating a tranquil scene that was as beautiful as the sunset.
Our exploration of South Lefroy continued with an attempt to locate the old Whaling Station. Unfortunately, we encountered a setback as the area was closed due to a potential asbestos risk, preventing us from accessing the site. Despite this, we made the most of our time by focusing on filming in the water and on the dunes. Each visit to the beach brought new encounters, including curious turtles that often approached us, adding an extra layer of excitement to our filming sessions. We were also lucky enough to spot some whales not far offshore, their presence adding to the sense of wonder and discovery.
The dunes at South Lefroy were a particular highlight for me. They appeared almost untouched and pristine, offering a dramatic and challenging landscape for driving. The F150 demonstrated its remarkable capabilities as it effortlessly navigated the sandy terrain, showcasing its prowess and handling in such an environment. The dunes not only provided a thrilling driving experience but also served as a stunning backdrop for our footage, enhancing the overall adventure.
In summary, Days 2 and 3 were packed with extraordinary experiences. From the dramatic views of the Charles Knife Edge Walk to the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises at South Lefroy, the adventure was rich with natural beauty and excitement. The combination of challenging terrain, unique wildlife encounters, and stunning landscapes made these days truly memorable and set a high standard for the rest of our journey.
Day 4
Day 4 started with the familiar routine of packing up camp, but the excitement of the journey kept us energized despite the early hour. Our route took us down the coast, with planned stops at Janes Bay and Oyster Bridge. However, as we approached these destinations, the weather took a dramatic turn. A powerful 5-meter swell, gusty winds, and persistent rain created challenging conditions. Despite the elements, the coastal landscape continued to reveal its intrinsic beauty.
Janes Bay and Oyster Bridge, usually basking in sunshine, now showcased their dramatic coastal character against the stormy backdrop. The sands, which shifted from vibrant reds to crisp whites with every dune, created a striking contrast against the dark, turbulent sea. The grasses, lush and verdant, appeared even more vivid against the stormy sky, turning greener as if responding to the rain. The transformation of the landscape in such weather added an intriguing layer to our journey, making it clear that the coast had its own dramatic and resilient charm.
By the afternoon, we arrived at Coral Bay Caravan Park, where we hoped to set up camp and wait out the storm. Our primary goal was to dive with the whale sharks the next morning, an activity we had all been eagerly anticipating. However, our hopes were dashed when we received the morning call at 7 AM confirming the cancellation of the tour due to the continued inclement weather. The whale sharks would have to wait for another time.
Undeterred by the setback, we pivoted to make the most of our time in Coral Bay. We spent the day filming various scenes around town, capturing the unique character of the area despite the gloomy weather. Pat took the opportunity to connect with fans, signing several autographs and engaging with the community. His interactions added a personal and authentic touch to our footage, highlighting the local enthusiasm and warmth.
As we continued our journey south, we stumbled upon a challenge that would test the capabilities of the F150. Off to the side of the track, we noticed a tall, steep dune that appeared untouched and challenging. It was clear that no one had attempted to conquer this dune in quite some time. Seeing this as an opportunity to showcase the F150’s off-road prowess, we set up cameras to document the attempt.
The F150 took its first run at the dune with impressive power. The vehicle climbed about three-quarters of the way up before coming to a halt, a testament to its strength and agility. Undeterred, Pat lined up for a second attempt. This time, the F150 surged up the steep incline with even more determination. As Pat described the performance, “You just keep feeding it and it just keeps going.” The vehicle reached the top of the dune with authority, successfully conquering the challenge and demonstrating its remarkable off-road capabilities.
Day 4, while marred by challenging weather, turned out to be filled with memorable experiences. The rugged beauty of the coast, the unexpected challenge with the F150, and the team’s resilience in making the most of the situation all contributed to a day that was both exciting and rewarding. Despite the setbacks, the day’s events highlighted the adventurous spirit of the journey and set the stage for more thrilling experiences ahead.
Day 5
Day 5 began with a sense of urgency as we set off for Warroora Station. The day quickly turned into a test of driving skills and vehicle endurance. As we hit the dunes, I faced a significant challenge: the Everest’s radiator fan had stopped working, and the temperature gauge began to rise dangerously.
With the gauge climbing northward, I had to take immediate action to prevent the vehicle from overheating. To keep the temperature in check, I realised I needed to maintain a speed of over 45 km/h. While 45 km/h might not seem very fast, it became a challenging target on the rough and uneven roads we were traversing. In many places, the terrain was so demanding that maintaining even 20 km/h was a struggle.
Navigating the dunes with a malfunctioning radiator fan added an extra layer of difficulty to an already arduous journey. The roads were filled with obstacles and uneven surfaces, making it difficult to keep up the necessary speed. Every bump and turn tested the Everest’s performance and my ability to manage the vehicle’s overheating issue.
Despite the challenges, we managed to press on and eventually reached Warroora Station. The station, known for its rugged outback charm and expansive landscapes, provided a much-needed respite after the tense drive. The journey had been a stressful one, but arriving at Warroora Station marked a welcome end to a day filled with both physical and mechanical hurdles.
Day 6
Day 6 commenced with the familiar rhythm of packing up camp, but there was a buzz of anticipation in the air. Our destination for the day was Elle’s Beach, a stunning coastal location that boasts not only natural beauty but also a touch of celebrity allure. Elle’s Beach is named after Elle Macpherson, the renowned supermodel who is said to frequent this idyllic spot. Although I didn’t have the fortune of spotting Elle herself, the beach proved to be a treasure in its own right.
The beach was renowned for its exceptional snorkeling opportunities. We were greeted by crystal-clear waters that provided a mesmerizing view of the underwater world. As we donned our snorkeling gear, the vibrant marine life beneath the surface came into focus. The water was teeming with colourful fish and intricate coral formations. For those interested in more active pursuits, some areas of the beach were ideal for spearfishing, adding an adventurous twist to the snorkeling experience.
A standout moment of the day was when Captain Pat had his chance to showcase his culinary prowess. He prepared a beautiful Black Snapper, a fish he had caught himself. Using the induction cooktop in the back of the F truck, Pat cooked the snapper to perfection. The fish was tender, sweet, and incredibly fresh, requiring only a subtle squirt of lemon to enhance its natural Flavors. Sharing this meal in such a picturesque setting made it even more memorable.
After savouring Pat’s delicious catch, we continued our journey towards Gnarloo Station. The drive to Gnarloo Station included an exhilarating 1.2-meter deep water crossing, which added a thrilling challenge to our travel. The crossing required careful navigation and skillful driving to ensure we made it through smoothly. The water splashed around us, and the adventure of crossing such a waterway was a highlight of the day.
Upon arriving at Gnarloo Station, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bed set up for my sleeping bag. It was a welcome luxury after days of sleeping in the swag. However, as comfortable as the bed was, I found myself missing the swag’s familiar coziness and the unique camping experience it offered.
Gnarloo Station itself was another breathtaking gem on our journey. The coastline here was marked by pristine turquoise waters, creating a striking contrast against the rugged land. As the day drew to a close, we were treated to another spectacular sunset. The sky was ablaze with vibrant colours—rich oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples—that reflected beautifully off the calm waters. The sunset was a serene and awe-inspiring end to a day filled with exploration, adventure, and culinary delight.
Day 6 was a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation. From snorkeling in the clear waters of Elle’s Beach to enjoying a delicious meal prepared by Captain Pat, and navigating a dramatic water crossing, the day was rich with experiences that highlighted the stunning landscapes and unique challenges of our journey. Each moment added to the sense of wonder and excitement that defined our adventure along this magnificent coastline.
Day 7
Day 7 began with an early start, well before the sun had even thought about rising. The quiet of the pre-dawn hours provided a perfect backdrop for a serene start to the day. As I made my way outside, the sky was just beginning to lighten, casting soft, muted hues across the landscape. It was a tranquil and inspiring moment, ideal for reflecting on the journey so far.
The primary goal for the day was to capture some early morning footage around Gnarloo Station. As the sun began to rise, it painted the sky with a beautiful gradient of colours—gentle pinks and oranges blending into the darker blues of the remaining night. The sunrise was a spectacular sight, and the light it cast over the station created a magical ambiance for our shoot.
The early morning shoot provided a unique opportunity to capture the landscape in its most serene and picturesque state. The golden light of the sunrise highlighted the natural beauty of the area, casting long, dramatic shadows and illuminating the textures of the rugged terrain. Every scene was bathed in a warm, soft glow, making it perfect for creating stunning visuals and capturing the essence of Gnarloo Station’s charm.
As the sun continued to rise, the day’s activities took shape. The early shoot was a vital part of our filming schedule, offering a chance to document the station and its surroundings at a time when the landscape was at its most breathtaking. The quiet of the morning, combined with the beauty of the sunrise, created a sense of calm and wonder that was both refreshing and inspiring.
With the sunrise shoot successfully completed, the rest of the day unfolded with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. The early start and the stunning morning light set a positive tone for the day’s work and provided a perfect start to another exciting chapter of our adventure. Day 7’s early morning magic highlighted the natural beauty of Gnarloo Station and set the stage for the day’s continued exploration and filming.
Following our early morning shoot, we set out for our next destination: 3 Mile Camp. This location quickly became my top pick among all the places we had visited on our journey. The drive to 3 Mile Camp was filled with anticipation, and upon arrival, it was clear why this spot was so special.
3 Mile Camp is renowned for its stunning surf and diverse range of activities. The waves here are impressive, providing excellent conditions for surfing and water sports. For those interested in exploring underwater, the camp boasts numerous snorkeling and diving spots that showcase the vibrant marine life and stunning coral formations of the area. The clear waters make it an ideal location for both experienced divers and casual snorkelers.
One of the standout features of 3 Mile Camp is its suitability for families. The camp offers safe swimming areas for children, making it an ideal spot for families to enjoy the beach while keeping the little ones safe. The gentle, sheltered spots are perfect for kids to splash around and enjoy the water without the usual concerns of strong currents or deep water.
Fishing enthusiasts will also find 3 Mile Camp to be a paradise. The area is known for its abundant fish, providing ample opportunities for both casual and serious anglers to cast their lines and reel in a catch. The variety of fish available ensures that there’s something for everyone, from novice fishers to seasoned experts.
Surfing at 3 Mile Camp looked to be a rewarding experience, offering a combination of pristine waves, beautiful surroundings, and a relatively uncrowded surf spot.
The campsites at 3 Mile Camp are another highlight. They are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, each offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re enjoying the view of the surf, the expansive sky, or the tranquil waters, the campsites provide a perfect setting to unwind and soak in the natural beauty.
Overall, 3 Mile Camp stands out as a versatile and scenic destination. Its combination of excellent surf, great snorkeling and diving spots, safe swimming areas for kids, and fantastic fishing opportunities make it a well-rounded and attractive location. The well-sized campsites with great views add to the appeal, making 3 Mile Camp a memorable highlight of our journey.
After enjoying the wonders of 3 Mile Camp, we packed up and hit the road once more, heading towards Quobba Station. This would be our base for the night and provide a new backdrop for our adventure.
Quobba Station, with its rugged outback charm and expansive landscapes, was an ideal setting for Josh’s cooking segment. The station’s distinctive features and scenic views added a unique touch to the shoot. As we arrived, the station’s vastness and natural beauty were immediately apparent, providing a perfect canvas for capturing both the cooking process and the surrounding environment.
Josh’s cooking segment was a much-anticipated part of our trip. He had been preparing for this moment, and it was exciting to see it all come together. With Quobba Station’s stunning backdrop, Josh set up his cooking station and began preparing his meal. The open space and rustic setting added authenticity and flair to the segment, making it more than just a cooking demonstration—it was a celebration of good food in a spectacular location.
The natural surroundings of Quobba Station provided a serene and picturesque backdrop for the filming. As Josh cooked, the camera captured the interplay between the sizzling food and the expansive outback views. The contrast of the vibrant, aromatic dishes against the rugged, earthy tones of the station created a visually compelling segment.
As the evening settled in, we enjoyed the fruits of Josh’s labor. The meal was not only a treat for the taste buds but also a fitting end to a day of exploration and filming. The combination of delicious food, great company, and the stunning setting of Quobba Station made the night memorable.
Day 7 wrapped up with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. From the beautiful surf at 3 Mile Camp to the engaging cooking segment at Quobba Station, it was a day filled with diverse experiences and highlights. The journey continued to showcase the beauty and versatility of the landscapes we were exploring, adding new layers of excitement and enjoyment to our adventure.
Day 8
Day 8 began with a sense of excitement as we prepared to explore one of the most dynamic natural features of the region: the blowholes. These natural wonders live up to their name, creating impressive displays of water and air as the ocean’s force interacts with the rocky coastline. The sight and sound of the blowholes in full action were truly spectacular, with powerful jets of water shooting up into the air and crashing against the rocks. It was a dramatic and exhilarating experience, capturing the raw power of nature.
After soaking in the awe-inspiring blowholes, we set off towards Carnarvon. The journey was a mix of reflection on the incredible experiences of the past days and anticipation for the next phase of our trip. Arriving in Carnarvon marked the end of our outback adventure, and it was time to transition to the next leg of our journey.
In Carnarvon, we prepared to catch a flight to Perth. The bustling atmosphere of the airport contrasted sharply with the remote and rugged landscapes we had been exploring. As we waited for our flight, there was a sense of completion and satisfaction about the journey so far. The experiences, from the stunning coastal locations to the exciting challenges and memorable moments, had made for an unforgettable adventure.
As we boarded the flight to Perth, the view from the window provided a final glimpse of the landscapes we were leaving behind. The transition from the vast outback to the urban environment of Perth signaled the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
Day 8 wrapped up our incredible journey through some of the most beautiful and adventurous locations, leaving us with memories of breathtaking sights and experiences. The day’s activities—experiencing the power of the blowholes and transitioning to the next part of our trip—highlighted the diverse and captivating nature of our adventure.
What an incredible trip it has been, filled with breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable moments. Covering over 800 kilometers of rugged dirt roads along a stunning coastline, this journey was a testament to the beauty and adventure that the Australian outback has to offer. From the mesmerizing blowholes to the serene campsites with sweeping views, each day brought its own set of awe-inspiring experiences.
The trip was made even more memorable thanks to the great people I had the pleasure of traveling with. Their camaraderie and shared enthusiasm for adventure turned each challenge into a cherished memory. Whether it was navigating the challenging dunes or enjoying a freshly cooked Black Snapper by the beach, the collective spirit of the group made every moment special.
