With kick off just months away and ticket sales through the roof, the Big Red Bash has nearly sold out, and there’s a pretty good chance they’re going to sell out sooner than later. As you’ve no doubt heard, Whispering Jack, yep, Mr John Farnham himself is headlining this years Bash with a huge line-up of artists including The Angels, Daryl Brathwaite (Horses, anyone?), The Hoodoo Gurus and Adam Brand amongst others.
The 2018 Big Red Bash runs from 10-12 July, and is being held as always, at Birdsville, in outback Queensland. It’s in its sixth year this year, with each year being bigger and better than the last. The one question that often comes up is, what is there to do while you’re out that way before and after the bash? We’re glad you asked.
The Simpson Desert
Considering Birdsville is the gateway to the infamous ‘Simmo’ you’d be mad not to point your 4X4 into the desert and have a poke around. You’ve got the brilliant desert wildflowers, rare pine trees and some of Australia’s most unique wildlife that live in the rolling red dunes of the Simpson Desert.
The Diamantina
If you’re heading in from the northern end of Queensland, or want a little bit of a detour The Diamantina National Park is a magical spot in Outback Queensland. From vast treeless plains, to sand dunes, and river channels, the park has it all. Bedourie borders The Diamantina and is a great little town for picking up last minute fuel and supplies before heading into Birdsville.
Cameron Corner
If you’re heading in from just about anywhere south of Brissy on the east coast, you’re going to be pretty well headed toward Cameron Corner. Located on the borders of South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, it’s a got a quiet little corner shop with fuel, food and accommodation, plus, their own golf course – Yep, you can play 9 rounds of golf through 3 different states, in just an hour or two!
Innamincka
Innamincka lies just to the north-west of Cameron Corner and is possibly one of Australia’s most picturesque areas. The township of Innamincka is on the way to Birdsville for a fuel and food stop, plus you’ve got the Cullymurra Waterhole (an actual billabong, not a pub), Kings Marker, and Cooper Creek all within cooee distance. It’s certainly worth a look-in.
So there’s more than a couple of things to have a look at on your way out or back from Birdsville. Just remember that the 2018 Big Red Bash has nearly sold out, so if you’re planning on heading out for it, or still trying to make up your mind, you need to head over here and get on it now – trust us, it’ll be worth it.
