The Ford Ranger MS-RT – a widebody, lowered, street-focused take on Australia’s best-selling ute, is creeping closer to an Aussie launch, thanks to a new production plan in Thailand.
Originally announced for Europe in early 2024, the MS-RT edition takes the standard Ranger and gives it an aggressive rally-inspired stance, courtesy of M-Sport Road Technology (MS-RT), the road-going offshoot of Ford’s UK-based M-Sport rally team. While the initial European models were built in South Africa and modified in the UK, Ford’s decision to manufacture and upgrade the MS-RT Ranger in Thailand could fast-track its arrival in Australia.
RMA Group Steps Up
The RMA Group – the same company responsible for converting the Ford F-150 to right-hand drive in Melbourne – has been tapped to handle MS-RT modifications in Thailand. With a production run of 200 units already underway, this move hints at a potential pipeline for the Australian market. Given that all Australian-market Rangers (except the upcoming South African-sourced Ranger Plug-In Hybrid) come from Thailand, the groundwork is already in place for a local release.
What Sets the MS-RT Apart?
The MS-RT variant transforms the Ranger from a tough off-roader to a road-focused performance ute, featuring:
- Widebody styling – muscular flared arches and an aggressive front bumper
- Lowered suspension – enhanced handling at high speeds
- 21-inch alloy wheels – the largest fitted to a factory Ranger
- Power-folding side steps – a first for the Ranger lineup
- Bespoke interior – unique trims and badging
Unlike the twin-turbo petrol V6 in the Ranger Raptor, the MS-RT sticks with Ford’s familiar 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, the same powerplant found in the XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, and Platinum grades.
Will It Land in Australia?
If Ford pulls the trigger on an Australian launch, the MS-RT Ranger would likely follow the same process as other Thailand-built special editions like the Wildtrak X, Tremor, and Black Edition. The Vehicle Personalisation Centre in Thailand – which fits accessories like canopies and roller shutters before shipping utes to Australia – could easily handle the MS-RT’s modifications.
Given Ford Australia’s history of rolling out limited-edition Rangers and the ute’s enduring popularity, the MS-RT seems like a no-brainer. With the RMA Group’s expertise and the ute already rolling off the production line in Thailand, all the ingredients are there – it’s just a matter of Ford Australia deciding when to serve it up.
For now, the MS-RT remains an overseas-only offering, but if demand is strong enough, it might not be long before this rally-inspired street truck makes its way onto Aussie roads.
