The Nissan Armada Mountain Patrol concept

Nissan in the US have just released some teaser images of their upcoming Armada Mountain Patrol concept, based around the full-size v8-powered SUV – the Y62 Armada.

Known Down Under as the Patrol, the Nissan Armada Mountain Patrol concept is still ten days away from debut at the 2018 Overland Expo West in Arizona on May 18. Nissan has gone to social media in the US and asked punters to throw ideas in the ring of what the Mountain Patrol should look like. They’ve asked for suggestions on the tyres, wrap, and roof topper with fans using the hashtag #MountainPatrol.

Despite offering up the teaser photos, full details will be available come the expo, however there’s a fair amount to be gleaned from teasers. At this stage we can see there will be a reasonably aggressive rear bar with dual tyre and jerry can swing-aways, as well as a 270-degree awning, and a roof-top tent. The wheels we’re not entirely sure on the robustness for serious off-road duties, however the Nitto tyres certainly look the part, despite the lower profile, and have been paired up with 4-wheel flares to keep them in the guards.

Around to the front and you can see a set of ARB Intensity spotlights on the bar, as well as a Rhino Rack up top. This houses the roof-topper and quite possibly the angriest light bar we’ve ever seen! As you’d expect a snorkel and sliders make an appearance, however we’re not entirely sure about the A-pillar “Jeep-esque” spotlights, nor what specifically the bonnet scoop means to achieve?

Overall some of the mods look good, while others will be there to serve a purpose. Despite being a concept, it’s nice to see a manufacturer start to think more towards an off-roading spec and we can only hope Nissan take some of these ‘conceptual ideas’ and offer up some factory accessories or a whole “trim level” specifically aimed at off-road ability.

  • It’s a start – heading in the right direction. Please get rid of the baby shit brown and replace with black (or anything other than baby shit brown), and is that V8 diesel or will they (foolishly) stick to petrol?

  • For pity sake, don’t lower the profile on the tyres, we want all the clearance we can get, not some bum-scraping wagon that can’t get over the kerb regardless of what the tyres look like. Put them on something else, please.

  • Hmmm well I guess that’s what would get from the target audience… Barbie in her pink corvette and Ken would drive one of these! It’s very pretty and don’t get me wrong, there are some very practical ideas applied here, they aren’t all bad but does it scream off-road 4×4? unfortunately noteven close! The previous Nissan Patrol was an iconic capable, rugged vehicle that looked good and worked, it just needed to be updated with some new world designs and smarts. Just reading some Internet forums about what people fix on there vehicle should be where every manufacturer should be focussed. Sorry Nissan but this is another fail in a long line of poor design decisions recently.

  • Saw this sort of concept on a Toyota Landcruiser 200 a few weeks ago at Lake Brockman in Western Australia, however, it was more advanced in that the shelter ‘wings where self supporting off the vehicle and the accommodation was more practical in that it was rectangular and lowered by the push of a button.
I believe the products came out of South Africa.
