Apple has revealed its latest and greatest new smartphone: the iPhone 14. Among the new improvements and changes, are a range of features for the weekend warriors and adventurers. In addition to the iPhone, our outdoor community has also been spoilt by a new Apple Watch, revealed with adventure qualities too. Check out what’s new.
SOS satellite message function
On the off-road track, many of us have experienced black-out zones where we’re unable to source any reception. When you’re out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage and an emergency occurs, it’s difficult to get in touch with help. Apple’s new SOS satellite message function aims to conquer this. It allows you to send messages without an internet connection by connecting to a satellite connection. However, this feature is only available initially in the USA and Canada.
If you call or text emergency services and can’t connect because you’re outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, your iPhone tries to connect you via satellite to the help that you need.
To connect to a satellite, hold your phone naturally in your hand and make sure that you’re outside with a clear view of the sky and the horizon. If you can, avoid dense foliage that could block the signal. Your phone will maintain a connection even if it’s locked.
Apple Watch Ultra
In addition to the iPhone, Apple has also launched the new Apple Watch Pro. It’s a supersized and rugged version of the previously loved Apple watch, only this one focuses on extreme activities! Right up our alley. Setting it apart from previous models is the 49mm display, sapphire glass, aerospace titanium, and bright orange Action Button.
You’ll find that there’s an additional GPS L5 GPS module for improved triangulation, even where the standard L1 GPS fails. If you like to explore the deep blue as much as you do the bush, you’ll be pleased to know that the WR100 rating lets you dive to 100 metres below the surface. When diving, you can see exactly how far you’ve ventured, as the Apple Watch displays the depth on the watch face.
When you’re on the road sometimes you have a limited power supply. Thankfully, the battery on the new Apple Watch Ultra allows up to 36 hours of battery life on a single charge. The new low-power mode extends this battery life to 60 hours.
Considered the most rugged and capable Apple Watch yet, there are three new bands to match. Choose from Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band, custom made with different extreme activities in mind to suit all adventurers.
