Ford have the Ranger FX4, Mitsubishi brought out the Triton GLS Sports Edition, and Toyota TRD’d the HiLux. At some stage, manufacturers noticed that 4WDers have been spraying their wheels and other bits black in backyards, spurning chrome for something more subtle and ‘tough’.
Now, Ram Trucks have joined the party with the Ram 2500 Code Black. No more mountainous chrome grille: it’s all gone black. Same deal with front and rear bumpers, and the wheels are a black 20” option.
20” wheels aren’t the best choice for a 4X4, but at least get a slight improved off-road performance via the rubber: Nitto Terra Grapplers are a solid all-terrain tyre that will easily out-perform typical OEM rubber off the beaten track.
It’s pretty cool, but it’s not as cool as the built-in eskies that you can option up on Ram Trucks. And anyway, the main reason why someone would spend the dollars on one of these rigs hasn’t changed: a 6.7 litre Cummins diesel inline-six that lives under the bonnet, which gives you 276kW at a very lazy 2,800rpm, and 1,084Nm @ 1,600rpm. It’ll safely and comfortably tow more than your license can probably handle, and it’s sheer size means space is rarely a problem.
The sticker price for this black beauty is $149,500, plus on-road charges. What do you think? Is this an overpriced Yankee ute, or is it worth the spend?
