Sydney To Melbourne On The Dirt
I struggle to think of a drive that bores me more than going from Sydney to Melbourne on the Hume Highway, it’s about as interesting to me as doing my tax return, and even that might be giving it a bit too much credit. Sure, it gets the job done, but it’s hardly the kind of trip that leaves you with stories to tell around the campfire. That’s why, we decided to find our own way from Sydney to Melbourne, a more interesting way. Along the dirt. Our Fords took us well beyond the usual blacktop, straight into the heart of some of Australia’s most stunning regions. As part of Season 16, available in full on the MR4X4 app, we ventured along hidden backroads, remote trails, and endless dirt tracks, uncovering rugged landscapes between these two cities. But for this article, I’m zeroing in on some real gems—the alpine stretches where the air is fresh enough to bottle (don’t laugh, it’s a real thing), the terrain tests your skill, and the scenery is second to none. Exploring the Aussie Alps We kicked things off as close as we felt comfortable with to Sydney, out the back of the Blue Mountains. It’s an area full of dirt roads, and almost all of them lead somewhere absolutely beautiful. Of all of them…

Levuka 4X4 Park Part 2 – the Bullant Track
Australia’s Best Alpine Tracks
When we think of camping in Australia, we usually imagine turquoise beaches, sunny weather, and the vast Outback. However, one type of camping often gets overlooked—alpine wheeling. Despite our love for conquering all terrains, snow-covered mountains aren’t top of mind for most Aussie 4X4ers. But for those willing to explore the few cold-climate spots we have; alpine adventures can unlock a whole new dimension of 4X4ing. In this article, we’ll uncover some hidden alpine gems and guide you through the essentials of wheeling above the tree line. New South Wales Kosciuszko National Park Home to Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko at 2,228 metres, Kosciuszko National Park is a prime spot for camping and 4X4 adventures. Beyond its towering peak, Kosciuszko is the largest National Park in New South Wales, offering over 6,900 square kilometres to explore. It’s a place where you can drive through poetic landscapes while watching wild brumbies gallop through snow-covered scenery. This park is a playground for extreme sport enthusiasts, offering activities like snowshoeing, skiing, mountain biking, and numerous bush walks. For campers, there are over forty campsites to choose from, including: Ngarigo Campground: Set along the Thredbo River, surrounded by Alpine Ash forest, this site is perfect for fly fishing, platypus spotting, and relaxing by the fire. It offers 30 campsites, basic amenities, and barbeques, but…

Tenterfield To Coffs On The Dirt
Patski said it right, everything is better on a dirt road. Especially when that dirt road isn’t surrounded by fire, like they had been at the start of this insane journey from Brisbane to Sydney on the dirt. Last edition we left you at the magnificent Boonoo Boonoo National Park with a thriving Platypus population and water holes aplenty, now it’s time to point the bull bars towards the coast, ‘cause we needed a wash. Tabulam, NSW Tabulam is located on the Bruxner Highway between Tenterfield and Casino, on the Clarence River, around 800 kilometres from the New South Wales state capital, Sydney. The gorgeous small town of Tabulam boasts a population of around 470 people and offered the convoy a chance to replenish our supplies and tuck into a hearty meal before exploring and camping along the Clarence River. The damage from the fires that’d swept the area only days before was still evident as we steered our way through the still-smoking farmland creating a sombre mood within the convoy. We needed a pick-me up and Pat knew just the place. Ewingar State Forest, NSW Popular among fossickers and campers alike, the Ewingar State Forest is located approximately 36 kilometres east of Tenterfield and encompasses some 18,433 hectares to explore. Here the colours changed from sunburnt yellows and blackened…

The Ultimate Off-Road Pad Thai
Let’s be real for a minute here, the tracks we travel throughout this great country are only part of the appeal of touring. It’s the stunning landscapes, the time with good mates, those once-in-a-lifetime sunsets, and near the top of the list has to be good eats. Yep, campfire cooking is the perfect opportunity for 4X4ers to push their culinary skills to the limit. Sam West from Club 4×4 Insurance came along on a recent filming run, and while he’s a top bloke to have a yarn with, and even more of a whiz on the insurance front, when that man dons an apron he means business. Here’s the epic Pad Thai he knocked together for a slice of gourmet living in a million-star hotel. Ingredients: The Foundation of Flavour Before we dive into the cooking process, let’s gather our ingredients. This recipe is built around easy-to-find ingredients that pack a punch in terms of flavour: – Rice noodles, the backbone of this dish, provide a tender and satisfying texture. – Aromatic base ingredients: chilli (to taste), 4 cloves of garlic, and a tablespoon of finely chopped lemongrass, setting the stage for an unforgettable flavour profile. – Finely chopped shallots and coriander, adding a fresh and vibrant touch. – One chicken breast, sliced into thin strips, offering lean protein to…
